Summary

Certainly Beresford made mistakes at Albuera that Wellington would probably have avoided. He had virtually no skirmishers out, and he did not protect his flanks adequately. Above all, he did not exercise close control over the battle and react to developments, as Wellington would have done, nor did he ensure that the orders he gave were properly carried out.

It is intriguing to consider how Wellington might have fought this battle, and it seems likely that, with his superior numbers, he would have retained the initiative and won a decisive victory at less cost.

Nevertheless, Albuera was a victory, though at a price, and it undoubtedly helped to sap French morale further when they discovered how hard it was to make the Peninsular Army accept defeat.
